The Spell Took an Unexpected Turn
He paced back and forth around the grounds of the mansion, weaving through groups of party guests in search of one particular face. His eyes scanned the shadows until he finally spotted a familiar, or rather partially familiar, silhouette leaning against a white fence covered in climbing vines.
It was Frederick.
Or the person Frederick used to be.
Under the dim evening light, Frederick now had long, wavy brown hair, striking makeup, and a black corset-style dress with a flared lace skirt. A pair of knee-high boots completed the look, making him appear as though he had stepped straight out of a gothic fashion photoshoot.
Lance hurried toward him, raising both hands in a gesture of surrender. Guilt was written all over his face.
"Dude, I'm so sorry!" Lance blurted out, tripping over his own words in his desperation to explain himself. "I know I messed up big time. I only did that stupid spell to turn you into a girl because I was desperate for a date to this rich people's party. I swear I never thought about the consequences!"
He paused for a breath before continuing.
"Please don't be mad. Let's just get out of here and go straight home. I already found the counterspell on that website. All we have to do is get back, and I'll reverse everything right away!"
Frederick had been staring at the ground, his hands held behind his back. Slowly, he lifted his head.
There was something different in his newly made-up eyes. A glint of amusement, perhaps, or even a hint of mischief.
He offered Lance a small, knowing smile, adjusted his posture, and answered with a calmness that completely contradicted his friend's frantic apology.
"Dude, relax. I didn't come out here to brood over what happened," Frederick said, casually adjusting one of the dress straps as though he had been wearing it for years.
"In fact, I was trying to come up with a convincing excuse to send you home alone."
Lance blinked.
"What do you mean?"
"The plan has changed," Frederick replied, crossing his arms with a confidence Lance had never seen in him before.
"Turns out, I've adapted pretty well to this little stunt you pulled on me. And you know what? I've already found someone else to give me a ride home later."
He paused, letting the words sink in.
"Well, obviously, that's after he takes me out to dinner first!"
Before Lance could process the news, let alone protest, Frederick turned on his heel with a dramatic swish of his lace skirt and headed back toward the dance floor.
Lance remained rooted to the spot, mouth hanging open, watching his friend disappear beneath the lights of the mansion.
The party music grew louder as Frederick rejoined the crowd, moving with a confidence that seemed almost impossible only an hour earlier.
Lance had come outside expecting to apologize, undo the spell, and take his old friend home.
Instead, he had just been dumped.
And judging by the smile Frederick wore as he disappeared into the crowd, Lance had a feeling the counterspell would have to wait a little longer.
