The Great Shift: A New Face, a Broken Marriage, and a Very Interesting Business Proposal
The selfie showed exactly what the mirror had been insisting on all morning: he was no longer the tired, fifty-two-year-old man who had spent years struggling with chronic back pain. The global phenomenon known as The Great Shift had completely reshaped humanity, and George had found himself in the body of a stunning young woman, with perfectly styled platinum-blonde waves, expressive green eyes, and remarkably delicate features.
For many people, such a transformation would have been the ultimate opportunity for eternal youth. For George, however, it was the beginning of a bureaucratic and deeply personal nightmare.
His first instinct had naturally been to save what remained of his old life. He called his wife, Martha. Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately, she had remained in her original body and circumstances.
Her reaction, however, was far from reassuring. When she realized that her husband now occupied the body of an attractive young woman, her initial shock quickly turned into cold fury. Martha was blunt over the phone. She couldn't even look at his photograph without feeling a confusing mixture of disgust and retroactive jealousy.
The conversation ended abruptly, with Martha demanding a divorce and insisting that George provide the contact information for his lawyers.
Just like that, George had lost the woman who had shared his life for three decades.
With his personal life falling apart, George directed his second message to Arthur, his longtime business partner at their investment firm.
He needed to establish his new legal identity and discuss how the company would continue operating now that one of its directors apparently looked more like a fashion model than a fifty-two-year-old investment executive.
Arthur was a practical man, accustomed to dealing with numbers, contracts, and difficult negotiations. He listened to George's voice messages with absolute skepticism. At first, he assumed it was some kind of scam or an exceptionally tasteless practical joke.
"George, if this is real, send me a picture right now. I need to see it to believe it," his partner finally wrote.
George adjusted his delicate white, lace-trimmed outfit, looked directly into the camera, and took the picture.
Arthur's reply arrived in less than thirty seconds. But it completely changed the direction of their corporate conversation.
Instead of questions about contracts, legal documents, or power of attorney, the message on George's screen contained just one unexpected proposition:
"Forget the termination clauses for now, George... I think we could merge our assets in a much more interesting way."
George felt his cheeks growing warm.
Apparently, The Great Shift was about to take him from a failed marriage straight into the beginning of a very different partnership.
And judging by Arthur's message, this particular merger might prove to be extremely profitable.
If you woke up in George's situation, what would worry you most: losing your marriage, rebuilding your professional identity, or discovering that someone from your old life suddenly sees you in a completely different way?
