The Price of Youth
Hugo went straight down to the laboratory that morning, expecting to find his employer buried beneath a mountain of notes and calculations.
Instead, the place was completely empty.
The silence was unsettling.
Hugo found it especially strange. After all, how many times had he endured one of Dr. Hans's endless lectures about punctuality, dedication, and the importance of never wasting a single minute?
Finding no clues in the underground laboratory, Hugo climbed the stairs toward the residential wing of the mansion. As he reached the upper floor, he heard the soft sound of footsteps coming from somewhere ahead.
He followed the noise down a long corridor and stopped abruptly outside the master bedroom.
The room was luxurious, decorated with warm textures, dark wood, and elegant retro furniture. Beside an imposing four-poster bed, leaning casually against one of its wooden posts, stood a breathtaking woman.
She wore a pale green silk nightgown trimmed with delicate white lace, with subtle rose details across the bodice. Her thick black hair was perfectly styled, and her eyes were framed by immaculate makeup.
Then she looked directly into Hugo's eyes.
"Finally, you've arrived, Hugo," she said. "Just in time to witness the fruits of our labor."
Hugo took a step backward, completely bewildered.
The voice was softer than he remembered, but the unmistakable German accent left no room for doubt.
For a moment, his mind desperately tried to find a logical explanation.
Was this his employer's secret girlfriend?
In more than forty years of loyal service at the mansion, Hans had never mentioned a woman.
Noticing the confusion written all over his assistant's face, the woman gave him a knowing smile.
It was an astute, slightly smug smile that Hugo knew very well.
"Behold, my dear Hugo," she continued, gesturing elegantly. "I tested the formula on myself, and it worked. After all these years locked away in that gloomy laboratory, I have finally achieved the youth I always dreamed of!"
Hugo stood there with his mouth hanging open, his eyes darting between the woman's youthful face and the room around him.
"Dr. Hans?! What happened? Is that really you?"
"In flesh, bone, and silk," she replied with a pleased smile.
She ran her delicate fingers along the wooden bedpost, her bare feet sinking slightly into the thick carpet.
Hugo's mind began racing.
He remembered the laboratory records from the previous night. He remembered the incredibly complex adjustments they had made to the formula, particularly the section dividing the variables into "male" and "female" parameters.
Weeks earlier, they had tested earlier versions of the compound on animals. One of the failed experiments, caused by an incorrect calibration, had produced a drastic change in the subject's biological sex.
Hugo slowly drew a breath.
"Dr. Hans..." he said, still in shock. "You didn't happen to forget to adjust the chromosomal parameters before taking the formula, did you?"
The scientist laughed softly.
She crossed her legs with complete confidence, seemingly amused by his question.
"Quite the opposite, my dear. I knew exactly what I wanted."
She glanced down at her silk nightgown, then back at Hugo.
"Do you really think this appeared in my wardrobe by accident overnight? I planned every detail of this new life."
She pushed away from the bedpost and began walking slowly toward him, her gaze remaining fixed on his.
Hugo suddenly felt that he understood far less about his employer than he had believed.
"Now, your portion of the elixir is waiting on the laboratory table," Hans continued. "There is only one final adjustment left to make on the central computer."
She stopped a few steps away.
"The system is waiting for you."
A mischievous smile appeared on her face.
"And now, Hugo... what choice will you make?"
She gestured toward the staircase leading back to the laboratory.
"Take the formula without making the adjustment and remain my loyal assistant..."
She paused deliberately.
"Or change the parameter to male, complete the process, and become my companion in this new eternity?"
Hugo stared at her in silence.
For forty years, he had followed Dr. Hans into every strange experiment, every impossible theory, and every dangerous scientific obsession.
But this time, for the first time, the decision was entirely his.
And somewhere deep inside the mansion, the central computer was patiently waiting for his answer.
