A Spell of Her Own: Carl's Unusual Wednesday

“So, let me get this straight. You spend every Wednesday night at home because your wife claims we're a bunch of bachelors and a bad influence on you?” Roberto asked, his voice thick with disbelief as he stepped into the living room.

“That's right,” Carl replied.

His voice was now soft and velvety, and it seemed to suit the striking figure sitting on the sofa far better than Roberto was prepared to admit.

“Okay. And to make sure you stay home, she casts a spell that turns you into a woman for the entire evening?”

“Exactly. Hard to believe, I know, but you're seeing it with your own eyes.”

Roberto took another step into the room, unable to look away.

The woman sitting before him was unmistakably Carl, or at least the person his best friend had somehow become. Long, shapely legs were framed by black lace-trimmed stockings, while high heels and a fitted black satin dress completed the look. The glossy fabric followed her new curves, and a modern brown bob with neat bangs framed a delicately made-up face.

It was an extraordinary transformation. More unsettling still was how naturally Carl seemed to inhabit it.

“And your wardrobe stays locked until your wife gets back from her hospital shift?” Roberto asked, lowering his voice.

“Locked up tight. She leaves me with a suitcase full of clothes she's picked out herself. Apparently, my choices are supposed to be part of the lesson.”

Carl adjusted a strand of hair with his painted fingernails. The gesture was so effortless that Roberto found himself staring again.

“But there's something I don't understand,” Carl continued. “Why are you looking at me like that? And why did you come here dressed as if you were expecting a special occasion?”

Carl glanced away, feeling warmth creep across his cheeks beneath the makeup. A shy, almost involuntary smile appeared on his carefully painted lips.

“Well, you kept insisting that you wanted to see me for yourself, and I've been alone here all evening. I figured I might as well get ready before you arrived. If this was going to be the first time you saw me like this, I didn't want to greet you looking as though I'd just rolled out of bed.”

He paused, smoothing the satin over his thighs.

“I even considered pretending to be one of my wife's distant cousins, but that would probably have made things worse. Knowing you, you'd spend the entire evening trying to flirt with me.”

Roberto slowly exhaled.

He walked over to the sofa and sat at the opposite end, resting one arm along the backrest. The distance between them suddenly seemed much smaller than it had a moment before.

His eyes traveled over Carl's carefully assembled outfit, lingering briefly on the sparkling necklace that descended toward the neckline of the dress.

“And what's stopping me from flirting with you right now?” Roberto asked.

Carl stared at him.

For a moment, he couldn't think of a single clever reply.

The silence was broken only by the faint hum of the television in the background. Roberto wasn't laughing. He wasn't teasing, either. He was looking at Carl with an intensity that made his heart beat faster.

“Roberto, don't be ridiculous,” Carl finally managed.

He tried to laugh, but the sound came out as a quiet, uncertain whisper.

“I'm Carl. Remember? The guy who helped you change your car's oil last Saturday.”

“The Carl I know doesn't look this good in a black satin dress,” Roberto replied calmly.

He leaned a little closer.

“Seriously, I think your wife miscalculated the risks of this spell. If her plan was to keep you safely at home, away from a bunch of irresponsible bachelors, she forgot to consider what might happen if one of those bachelors showed up unexpectedly and discovered that his best friend had become the most fascinating woman he'd ever met.”

Carl looked down at his hands, which rested flat against the sofa cushions. He carefully adjusted the fabric of his dress across his thighs, suddenly very conscious of the silky material against his skin.

The sensation sent a faint shiver through him, but Roberto's proximity was far more distracting.

“She said I needed to learn to be more understanding,” Carl explained.

His voice faltered slightly as he crossed his legs, the heels catching the soft light from the living room lamps.

“Apparently, spending a few evenings in someone else's shoes is supposed to teach me something about empathy. Though I suspect she enjoys the punishment part more than she'd ever admit.”

Roberto chuckled.

“And the suitcase?”

“That's all I get. She leaves it in the closet, and everything inside is chosen for me. If I want to watch television, my options are this outfit or a pink silk pajama set.”

Roberto's smile widened.

“I have to admit, the pink pajamas sound intriguing. But I think you made the right choice for tonight.”

He paused, studying Carl's expression.

“You look absolutely stunning.”

Carl's cheeks warmed again. He wasn't sure whether to blame the makeup, the spell, or the fact that Roberto had never complimented him like that before.

“Don't get carried away,” he muttered. “Tomorrow morning, I'll be back to normal, and you'll never let me hear the end of this.”

“Maybe,” Roberto said. “But tomorrow morning isn't tonight.”

He shifted closer, leaving just enough space between them for Carl to decide whether he wanted to move away.

Carl didn't.

“Besides,” Roberto continued, “you mentioned that distant cousin you almost pretended to be. What was her name?”

Carl looked up.

“Why?”

“I'm curious. If I'm going to spend the evening talking to her, I should at least know what to call her.”

“You're impossible.”

“That's what you've always told me.”

Carl tried to suppress a smile, but it was too late. Something had changed between them, and neither could pretend otherwise.

He had spent the last few Wednesdays resenting his wife's unusual lesson. He'd complained about the locked wardrobe, the ridiculous outfits, and the inconvenience of having to live by someone else's rules. He had never imagined that the strangest consequence would be discovering a side of himself he hadn't known existed, or seeing his oldest friend in an entirely different light.

Roberto's gaze softened.

“Tell me something, Carl. If the spell wears off tomorrow morning, will you still remember everything that happens tonight?”

“Of course.”

“Good.”

Roberto offered him a small, tentative smile.

“Then perhaps I should make tonight memorable.”

Carl's heart skipped a beat.

For once, he had no sarcastic comeback, no convenient excuse, and no idea what his wife would say when she came home from the hospital.

All he knew was that Wednesday had suddenly become the most interesting night of the week.

And, for the first time since the spell began, Carl wasn't in a hurry for midnight to arrive.
