Take it or leave it

Ryan blinked several times, trying to make sense of his own thoughts. The reflection in the glass beside him — long hair, accentuated curves, that dress he would never have chosen — only made everything feel more surreal.

“I… I don’t understand,” he said, taking a breath, his voice coming out higher than he remembered. “Where is my payment? And why am I in your wife’s body?”

Herbert leaned back in the armchair with an almost irritating calm, crossing his legs as if he finally had all the time in the world.

“Well,” he began, a satisfied smile forming on his face, “this is your payment. You wanted enough money to prove that my wife was stabbing me in the back, siphoning funds, hiding investments… and you did. Now, as her, you’re entitled to half my fortune. That’s far more than the little sum you asked for. Quite the deal, if you think about it.”

“That wasn’t our agreement,” Ryan protested, gripping the arms of the chair for balance, still not used to the unfamiliar weight and posture of that body.

“I know it wasn’t,” Herbert said, leaning forward, his expression softening just enough to show that the game was entirely in his hands. “But you brought me all the evidence. And as ‘my wife,’ if you file for divorce, you get absolutely nothing. A single signature, and everything goes right back to me.” He shrugged, almost affectionately. “Now… if you behave like a good wife, then yes. In her place, you can enjoy everything I have. Much more than the amount you asked for.”

Herbert’s smile grew slowly, deliberately.

“It’s take it… or leave it.”

His heart fluttered — something it had never done before — as tiny possibilities crept into his thoughts. Duties. Roles. And the realization that, maybe… just maybe… some of those things might not be as terrible as he had imagined.

A strange, involuntary warmth rose in his chest.

Was it possible that this new life could be… good?

  1. I wouldn't even have to think about it... I'd take my new husband into the bedroom and proceed to turn him inside out.😁
