- The Wrong Drink, the Wrong Body, and One Very Awkward Homecoming
There was just one problem. Her mother’s heart refused to cooperate.
The thought of leaving her young children with an unfamiliar babysitter kept her awake at night. She needed a way to make the transition easier, something that would help the kids feel safe while she was away.
That was when Carol remembered an unusual family secret.
Using an old recipe passed down through generations, she prepared a magical potion and left it in the refrigerator. Her instructions were simple: the babysitter was to take just one sip. The drink would temporarily transform the person into an exact copy of Carol, giving the children a familiar face until their mother returned.
It was an ingenious plan.
Or it would have been, if Marcos’s childhood best friend hadn’t been Alex.
Alex was the sort of man who treated every house as if it belonged to him. Nosy, shameless, and perpetually convinced that he knew better than everyone else, he had been given a key so he could help with the children while Carol was away.
On the first day of her trip, Marcos had to stay late at the office. Alex, left to his own devices, decided to raid the kitchen for a snack.
Opening the refrigerator, he spotted a stylish bottle filled with a strangely luminous, colorful liquid. It looked expensive, exotic, and vaguely like some imported grape or tropical fruit drink.
Naturally, Alex didn’t bother asking anyone what it was.
He simply uncorked the bottle and swallowed its contents.
The consequences were immediate.
By the time the children had gone to bed, the magic had completed its work. Alex’s tall, awkward frame had been reshaped into the striking figure of a beautiful woman with long brown hair, elegant features, and curves that made his former appearance seem like a distant memory.
The resemblance to Carol was uncanny. Every detail was there, from her face to her voice.
There was, however, one small difference.
The new Carol possessed a level of confidence and mischievous audacity that the original would never have displayed.
The initial shock was followed by a frantic emergency call to Carol at her hotel. Once everyone had calmed down enough to discuss the situation, they reached an agreement. To avoid confusing or frightening the children, Alex would have to take Carol’s place throughout the household routine until her business trip was over.
It was a temporary solution.
At least, that was what everyone told themselves.
The trouble was that Alex took his new role far too seriously.
And he seemed determined to enjoy every minute of it.
By the time the clock crept past eleven that night, Marcos finally unlocked the front door. Exhausted, his tie loosened and his mind still occupied by sales reports, he stepped inside expecting a quiet house and an empty bed.
Instead, he found himself facing a surprise that nearly made him drop his briefcase.
He switched on the hallway light and walked toward the master bedroom. Then he stopped dead in the doorway.
There she was.
Sitting on the edge of the neatly made bed beneath the warm glow of a bedside lamp, the woman who looked exactly like his wife greeted him with a sly, almost feline smile.
Carol never smiled like that.
But Alex certainly did.
And then Marcos noticed what his unexpected hostess was wearing.
A short black lace nightdress, delicate and partially sheer, with thin straps and a daring neckline that accentuated the transformation’s astonishing results.
Marcos’s briefcase slipped from his hand and landed on the carpet.
“Marcos, darling,” the woman purred, her voice perfectly matching Carol’s. “You’re late. Dinner’s already gone cold.”
The words were familiar. The voice was familiar.
That teasing, drawn-out tone, however, belonged unmistakably to his best friend.
Marcos stared at the woman on the bed, then covered his face with both hands. A nervous laugh escaped him as he tried to reconcile the scene in front of him with the absurd explanation he already knew.
Yes, he had heard about the potion accident. Yes, Carol had explained everything over the phone.
But knowing that his wife’s double was actually Alex, the same Alex he played video games with and watched football with every Sunday, was one thing.
Seeing that double sitting in his bedroom, dressed for an evening that seemed designed to test every ounce of his self-control, was something else entirely.
“Alex,” he finally managed, “please tell me you’re not enjoying this.”
The woman tilted her head, looking positively delighted.
“Enjoying what, darling?”
Marcos groaned.
Somewhere in the back of his mind, he knew his shameless friend could have chosen a less provocative outfit. The children were asleep, Carol was miles away, and there was absolutely no practical reason for Alex to turn their reunion into such an elaborate performance.
Then again, Alex had never needed a practical reason to make Marcos’s life difficult.
And judging by that wicked smile, the next few weeks were going to be much longer than either of them had anticipated.
