The Great Shift: Trading Places with the Boss's Wife
Mr. Palmer paced back and forth across the room, the carpet seeming to sink beneath the frantic rhythm of his footsteps. He clutched his phone, eyes fixed on the screen as his fingers desperately searched through one website after another, hoping to find some explanation, some loophole, anything that might tell him this nightmare could still be reversed.
On the sofa, however, the atmosphere couldn't have been more different.
Jace looked almost bored. After all, the Great Shift had swapped countless people around the world, and somehow he had ended up in his boss's wife. Just that morning, he had been nothing more than an intern at the firm. Now he was sitting in the luxurious bedroom of one of the company's most powerful executives, trying to make the best of a situation that had turned everyone's lives upside down.
A few minutes earlier, Jace had stood in front of the walk-in closet mirror and made a very simple decision.
If the world had gone completely crazy, he wasn't going to spend the rest of the night complaining about being trapped in a suit and tie.
Instead, he had chosen a black lace lingerie set and a matching silk robe.
He had to admit, the new look suited him remarkably well.
"Mr. Palmer, there's no point searching the internet for a solution," Jace said calmly, adjusting the robe as it slipped slightly from one shoulder before bringing his champagne glass to his lips. "According to the experts, the changes are permanent."
There was something almost provocatively relaxed about his voice.
Jace had already accepted the direction the evening was taking.
And, judging by his expression, he wasn't exactly unhappy about it.
Palmer suddenly stopped in the middle of the room. His eyes widened as he stared at the stunning, self-assured figure now occupying the place his wife had once filled.
"Come on, this can't be happening," he muttered, running a hand over his face. "I was doing everything I could to save my marriage, and now this happens?"
Jace gave him a knowing smile.
He set the champagne aside and picked up the phone resting on the cushion beside him.
"Well, I won't lie. I unlocked her phone and found out why things went wrong in the first place." He raised an eyebrow. "But since you forgave her and you're trying to start over, wouldn't it only be fair for me to take the risk and take over this life instead?"
He crossed his legs, making it perfectly clear that Mrs. Palmer had acquired a very different attitude overnight.
Palmer stopped pacing.
For several seconds, he simply stared at the figure on the sofa, slowly realizing that the balance of power between them had changed completely.
He wasn't looking at his former wife anymore.
He was looking at a young man with ambition.
Jace had spent years watching people like Palmer from the bottom of the corporate ladder. Now, by the strangest twist of fate imaginable, he had been handed a place beside one of the most powerful men in the company.
And Palmer couldn't deny what he saw.
The ambition in Jace's eyes gave the familiar face and elegant figure a completely new energy. It was magnetic, confident, and almost impossible to ignore.
Perhaps the strangest part was that Palmer found himself responding to it.
He had fallen in love with the idea of his beautiful wife once before. Maybe what he was seeing now wasn't entirely different.
Maybe it was simply a new version of the same dream.
The businessman took a deep breath, slipped his phone into his pocket, and straightened his shoulders, slowly recovering some of his usual executive composure.
His eyes still betrayed him, however, lingering for a moment on the black lace before returning to Jace's face.
"Well..." Palmer finally said. "We can try."
His voice was quieter now, but considerably firmer.
"But let me make one thing clear. If there's another 'affair,' we're getting divorced. No second chances."
Jace smiled.
He took another sip of champagne, savoring the smooth taste as he maintained eye contact with his boss, who was now supposed to be his partner.
He adjusted the silk robe with effortless elegance, taking in the luxurious bedroom, the expensive furniture, the champagne, the view outside the window.
This was no longer someone else's life.
At least, not entirely.
"Mr. Palmer, do you really think I'd look at everything we have here and risk losing it?" Jace asked, his confidence almost making the magnate forget that he had been speaking to his former intern only that morning.
"Not a chance."
He glanced down at the phone in his hand.
"If you want, I can smash this thing right now."
Jace tossed the phone onto the corner of the sofa.
"And honestly, I don't even want to know who ended up in the body of her former lover."
He extended his free hand toward Palmer, inviting him to come closer.
For the first time that night, Palmer stopped thinking about the impossible world outside.
The Great Shift had changed everything.
But perhaps, Jace thought, some changes weren't meant to be reversed.
