Six Months to Change the Rules

“Come on, Janice. Months ago, when you put me in your body, you told me how difficult it was to keep it in shape. You said I was making unreasonable demands on you. Well, now that I’ve proved it can be done, you want to switch back?

“Look, you ruined my body, and I’m not about to waste another year on workouts and dieting just because you kept your bad habits while living in mine. I’m not agreeing to that! Besides, I’ve replaced my entire wardrobe with clothes I actually enjoy wearing now. You’ll just have to adapt, because I’ve already managed to do it!”

Marcos crossed his legs with deliberate slowness, smoothing the fabric of his fitted black dress over his new curves. The slender heel of his sandal caught the light as he pointed one elegant foot in Janice’s direction, like a silent accusation.

He ran a hand through his long, glossy black hair, savoring every second of his victory. Six months of chicken and sweet potatoes, waking up at five every morning to go running, all to prove Janice wrong. And it had worked.

Across the coffee table, the situation was considerably less impressive.

Janice, trapped in Marcos’s former body, wore a faded gray sweatshirt dusted with crumbs from a bag of chips. Her shoulders slumped, her posture was careless, and, to Marcos’s horror, a small belly was already beginning to show beneath her T-shirt.

“This is ridiculous, Marcos! You’re playing dirty!” Janice protested, her voice deep and masculine, brimming with genuine frustration.

She tried to spring to her feet, but the weight of her sedentary body sent her sinking back into the sofa cushions.

“You know perfectly well that your old bone structure and metabolism were working against me! I tried following that crazy diet of yours, but your stomach was a black hole of anxiety!”

Marcos laughed softly, the melodious sound nothing like the sharp, impatient tone he had once used in his former life as a man.

“Oh, please, Janice. Don’t blame biology for what your complete lack of discipline did to my old six-pack. I handed you a temple, and you turned it into a fast-food franchise in less than six months. Now you look in the mirror, see me looking fabulous in this little black dress, and think we can just snap our fingers and switch back? That’s not how this works.”

Janice stared at her own hands. They were large, rough, and calloused, with badly trimmed nails. For the first time, genuine desperation began to creep in.

The original idea behind the body swap had been to teach Marcos a lesson, to make him understand the social pressures women faced every day. But Marcos had simply refused to play the victim. Instead, he had embraced his new identity, turned himself into the neighborhood gym’s most dedicated regular, and transformed his appearance into something Janice had never imagined.

“But what about my clothes? And my jewelry?” Janice demanded, pointing toward the walk-in closet at the end of the hallway. “You have no right to confiscate my life!”

“Your clothes? Those loose tunics and elastic-waist pants you wore to hide yourself?”

Marcos rose with such effortless elegance that Janice could only stare. He adjusted the neckline of his dress and gave her a knowing little smile.

“They’ve all gone to charity. My wardrobe is now all designer fashion, flattering necklines, and hemlines that show off the work I’ve put in. If you want your ID and your old body back, I suggest you start using the treadmill tomorrow morning at six. Maybe once you’ve lost those ten kilos you so generously gave me, I’ll consider your request.”

He picked up his black handbag from the console table and gave his reflection one last approving glance.

“Until then, you’ll just have to make do with the sweatshirt.”

With that, Marcos walked out, leaving Janice alone with the noise of the television and the double burden of her own laziness.

The body swap had been meant to teach someone a lesson. Six months later, it was Janice who was discovering just how difficult it could be to live with the consequences of her choices.
