The Great Shift Had a Wicked Sense of Timing
His best friend Doug's wedding had descended into absolute chaos within seconds. The only bit of luck in the middle of the worldwide transformation was that the bride and groom had somehow swapped places with each other, leaving the ceremony at least vaguely organized.
The same couldn't be said for Mark.
When the strange effects of the Shift finally settled, he discovered that he had ended up in the body — and the outfit — of one of the bridesmaids.
And apparently, the universe wasn't finished messing with him yet.
A sudden gust of wind swept through the garden where the wedding reception was being held, sending ribbons fluttering, napkins flying, and the floral decorations swaying.
For Mark, however, the biggest problem was his new dress.
The pretty pink floral skirt was light, wide, and apparently designed to catch every single breeze that passed through the garden.
He instinctively grabbed the hem as another gust swept underneath it.
"Seriously?" he muttered.
Trying to keep his dignity while standing in white heels was already difficult enough. Trying to keep a fluttering skirt under control at the same time was turning into an entirely different challenge.
As he stood near the wedding cake, Mark glanced down at his ridiculous new outfit and wondered who had decided that bridesmaids needed short, flowing dresses for an outdoor wedding.
Why hadn't the bride simply chosen long dresses?
Another gust answered his question.
The skirt billowed dramatically once again, forcing Mark into another frantic attempt to hold it down while pretending absolutely nothing unusual was happening.
Unfortunately, his struggle had attracted attention.
The photographer had been standing nearby, camera already in hand.
Click.
Mark froze.
Click.
He slowly turned toward the photographer.
The man lowered his camera, trying very hard not to laugh.
"Don't you dare," Mark warned.
The photographer grinned.
"Too late."
By the end of the reception, Mark had learned two important lessons about his new life.
First, never underestimate the Great Shift.
And second, always check the weather before accepting a bridesmaid dress.
As for the photographer?
He had somehow captured the most talked-about picture of the entire wedding.
And Mark had a horrible feeling it wasn't going to stay private for very long.
