Alejandro's Glass Bride
For months, he had followed clues leading through an invisible empire until every trail converged on a single name: Don Alejandro.
The man wasn't merely the head of an international cartel. He was a shadowy figure who controlled judges, politicians, and police officers alike. Alejandro had eyes and ears on every street corner in the city.
And Carter had become an intolerable thorn in the magnate's side.
Carter's mistake was believing he was safe inside his own apartment.
On a rainy night, the lock didn't stand a chance. Three armed men in perfectly tailored suits subdued him before he could even reach his holster.
There were no gunshots. No brutal beating.
Only the cold glint of a needle and a chemical substance that made the detective's world disappear within seconds.
When Carter began to regain consciousness, the first thing he felt wasn't pain, but suffocating comfort.
He wasn't tied to a metal chair in an abandoned warehouse.
He was lying on an absurdly soft queen-size bed, surrounded by genuine silk sheets that seemed to float over his skin.
The air carried the heavy scent of roses and expensive French perfume.
"Finally awake, my dear."
A deep, measured, commanding voice echoed through the room.
Carter tried to sit up abruptly, but his body responded with an unsettling sluggishness.
Seated in a velvet armchair in the corner of the softly illuminated room was Don Alejandro.
The magnate held a glass of whiskey, watching him with an expression that mixed clinical coldness with something disturbingly close to admiration.
"Alejandro..." Carter tried to growl.
But the word died in his throat.
His voice didn't come out with the rough, steady tone of a veteran detective.
Instead, it emerged as a soft, melodic feminine voice—a sound so foreign that Carter froze.
"Detective Carter no longer exists," Alejandro said, rising from his chair and slowly walking toward the bed.
"Making a body disappear into the ocean attracts investigations. But transforming the man who hunted me into the masterpiece I lost..."
He smiled faintly.
"Now that is poetic."
He gestured toward Carter as though presenting a work of art.
"Science and money can recreate almost anything, Carter. Even the features of my late wife."
Panic struck Carter like a punch.
He thrust his hands forward, and the sight of them left him paralyzed.
His calloused fingers and knuckles marked by years of fights were gone.
In their place were delicate hands, perfectly manicured nails, and impossibly smooth skin.
He touched his own face.
The square jaw and scar on his chin had disappeared.
His features were now delicate, his lips full, while long waves of silky blonde hair cascaded over his shoulders, exactly matching the reference photograph.
"Look at you," Alejandro murmured.
He reached out and lightly touched one of the blonde strands, making Carter instinctively recoil.
"Perfect."
Carter looked down at himself, and the breath vanished from his lungs.
He wasn't wearing his detective's clothes anymore.
Instead, he was dressed in a breathtaking haute couture gown, extravagant and opulent.
The bodice was made from a shimmering transparent mesh, encrusted with hundreds of tiny pink and crimson crystals that glittered beneath the dim light. They traced elegant curves, an impossibly narrow waist, and a generous bust that Carter could barely comprehend was now part of his body.
Around his shoulders—and covering much of the bed—yards upon yards of voluminous metallic baby-pink satin spread like a luxurious quilt, turning him into something resembling a living display doll.
It was a gala gown fit for royalty.
And yet, it felt far too heavy for him to ever run in.
"This room has everything you'll need."
Alejandro walked toward the solid oak door, setting aside his whiskey.
"Clothes. Jewelry. Every luxury money can buy."
He paused at the doorway.
"You'll have a life of royalty, locked away at the top of my fortress. The world will continue searching for the missing Detective Carter..."
His gaze settled on the transformed detective.
"...while you spend the rest of your days as my perfect and silent companion."
The door closed with a heavy electronic click.
The sound of the automatic locks echoed through the silent room.
Carter sank back against the padded velvet headboard, the layers of pink satin pooling around him.
He stared at his delicate hands, then at the extravagant room that looked as though it had been torn straight from a fairy tale.
The tough detective of the big city had been completely erased.
Now, trapped inside a flawless and breathtaking new body, Carter was forced to face the reality of his new life.
A luxurious prison.
And somewhere beyond that locked door, Don Alejandro was already preparing for the return of the wife he had lost.
