The Midnight Laundry Bet
“End of the shift. Time for the harvest, Jamie,” he announced, rubbing his hands together with a tired grin.
The “harvest” was their sacred tradition. Every night, the two of them searched the washing machines and dryers for abandoned clothes. Whoever found the strangest items and assembled the most ridiculous outfit won a free breakfast sandwich the following morning.
Owen was already celebrating. He had discovered a perfectly preserved pair of size-ten lilac high heels tucked behind a lint filter. As far as he was concerned, the competition was over.
“You won't believe what the college theater crowd left in machine seven,” Jamie called from the back corridor. His voice was muffled by the metallic slam of a dryer door.
“Nothing beats these heels, buddy. Face it. Breakfast is on you tomorrow,” Owen teased, leaning against the white washing machines in the center row.
“Oh, yeah? You sure about that?”
When Jamie finally appeared in the corridor, Owen nearly swallowed his tongue.
His friend hadn't simply thrown together a few abandoned garments. He had committed to the concept with the dedication of a professional stylist preparing a runway model.
Jamie wore a pink tulle babydoll trimmed with fluffy feathers, its delicate hem falling to mid-thigh. A perfectly styled white bob wig framed his face, giving his features a surprisingly delicate, almost captivating appearance. And to complete the ensemble, he was balancing effortlessly in the very same lilac heels Owen had been counting on to secure his victory.
Jamie placed both hands on the folding counter, shifted his hips to one side, and arched his back in a confident model's pose that wouldn't have looked out of place on the cover of a fashion magazine.
“Well?” Jamie tilted his head, holding Owen's gaze with a teasing smile his friend had never seen before. “Who's buying breakfast tomorrow?”
Owen blinked several times, frozen in place. The mop slipped from his hand and clattered onto the floor.
His eyes traveled from Jamie's long legs to the pink babydoll, then finally settled on his friend's face. For the first time in their two years of nightly competitions, Owen realized that Jamie had no intention of taking the outfit off just yet.
“Okay,” Owen finally managed. “I'll admit it. You win.”
Jamie smiled and took a few careful steps forward, the heels clicking against the tiled floor.
“That's a start.”
“A start? What does that mean?”
Jamie glanced toward the darkened front windows. The laundromat was empty, the machines hummed softly, and the clock had just struck midnight.
“Well, Owen, we still have an hour before we lock up for good. I thought I'd give this outfit a proper test run.”
He turned toward the long row of washers, inspecting his reflection in their circular glass doors.
“Besides,” he added, smoothing the feathery trim, “I have to admit something. I've spent the last two years laughing at your ridiculous outfits. Tonight, I finally understand the appeal.”
Owen folded his arms, trying to recover his usual confidence.
“You're enjoying this way too much.”
“Maybe.” Jamie gave him a mischievous look. “But tomorrow morning, you're buying me the biggest breakfast sandwich they have. And if you want your revenge, you'd better find something spectacular next time.”
Owen glanced at the abandoned clothes piled in their sorting basket, then back at Jamie's triumphant pose.
For once, he had absolutely no comeback.
And as the clock ticked past midnight, Owen began to suspect that their little game had just become a lot more interesting.
