The Great Shift: A Call Home
Now, he was holding an old-fashioned telephone receiver with long, delicate fingers. His familiar clothes had vanished, replaced by a white strapless lace corset that cinched his impossibly narrow waist, along with matching lace lingerie. Dark, voluminous waves of hair framed his new shoulders, and his skin looked remarkably smooth and radiant.
The mobile networks were dead, and chaos had taken over the streets. Desperate for answers, Henry had picked up the hotel room's landline and dialed his own home number, praying that his wife, Alice, would answer.
The phone rang three times.
When he finally heard the click of the receiver being picked up, Henry blurted out everything at once, his new voice emerging in a soft, melodious, unmistakably feminine tone.
"Alice? Honey?! It's me, Henry! Something's happened to the world! My body has changed, and I'm wearing... I don't even know what I'm wearing! Alice, can you hear me?"
A loud crash came from the other end of the line, followed by a heavy silence and the sound of someone breathing hard. Henry thought he could hear Alice trying to respond in the background, but her voice was suddenly drowned out by the sound of heavy footsteps.
"Henry?! Is that you?!"
A man's rough, trembling voice echoed through the receiver, thick with panic.
Henry frowned, pressing the black telephone against his ear. Its coiled cord draped across the lace neckline of his unfamiliar outfit.
He recognized that voice immediately.
It belonged to his next-door neighbor.
"Mr. Barn?! What are you doing in my house? Where's Alice?"
"Henry, thank God! I heard the phone ringing from your living room. Your front door was open, so I came running over!" His neighbor's voice cracked with sheer desperation. "I don't know what's happening! One moment, I blinked, the whole world seemed to snap, and the next thing I knew, I was in Mr. Barn's body! I looked in the mirror, and I'm an old man in my sixties!"
He paused, apparently struggling to catch his breath.
"Henry, for God's sake, where's my body? Where's my life?! What's happening to us?!"
Henry closed his eyes, trying to absorb the full impact of the Great Shift.
The disaster was far more widespread than he had imagined. While he had been trapped in a hotel room, transformed into a stunning woman dressed in white lace, his young neighbor had somehow been thrown into the body of an elderly man. And Alice was probably dealing with her own transformation somewhere inside their house.
"Okay... just calm down. Try to breathe," Henry urged, struggling to maintain his composure as his gaze drifted toward his unfamiliar curves in the mirror.
"Stay there with Alice. I'm finding the first car I can and heading home right now."
He hung up, still staring at his reflection.
For the first time since the world had turned upside down, Henry realized that getting home might be the easy part.
He had no idea who, or what, he would find waiting for him when he arrived.
