The Reboot Look
For him, the process had been complicated. He drove for hours before finally making it back to his hometown and reuniting with his children and wife. Now, just a short distance from the address of his old home, he caught himself wondering:
“Did I make the right choice with this outfit? I mean, it’s not my fault that, in the original owner of this body’s wardrobe, this was the most modest piece I could find.”
George adjusted the men’s plaid shirt over his shoulders, trying to use it as a shield against the wind and the curious looks from people on the street. The brown corset was so tight that taking a deep breath had become a genuine challenge, while the white ruffled miniskirt left him vulnerable to even the slightest strong breeze.
He had spent the last forty years wearing loose jeans and company T-shirts. Now, he looked like he had stepped straight out of a young fashion catalog.
He glanced at his reflection in the window of a parked car. The delicate face, framed by blonde hair tied into two pigtails, wore an expression of pure confusion. He sighed, and the sound that came out was far higher-pitched than his fifty-something mind was accustomed to.
With clumsy fingers and perfectly filed nails, he tightened his grip on the chain strap of the white purse, trying to remember whether he had put his wallet and old identification documents inside.
The Great Shift had scrambled the world geographically, but the psychological barrier of knocking on his own front door while looking like this was the real test of endurance.
He walked the final few yards toward the familiar sidewalk. The mailbox still bore the family name, its lettering peeling away from the metal.
George took a deep breath, straightened his posture in a body he barely knew, and climbed the porch steps. Before touching the doorbell, he thought about his wife, Clara, and his children.
“Well,” he thought with nervous optimism, “at least the plaid shirt proves I still have a little bit of my old style.”
He planted his fingers against the wood and knocked on the door.
Quick footsteps began to sound from the other side, signaling that the moment of truth had finally arrived.
