Double Date
"Of course I am," his wife replied, confident and stunning in a sleek black dress. She was carefully applying lipstick in front of the living room mirror. "We agreed we'd make the best of this situation. The accident happened six months ago, Calvin. Six! We tried to stay a couple, really... but you know women were never quite my thing."
Calvin sighed, carefully sitting on the couch and crossing his legs—more gracefully than he liked to admit. He was still getting used to everything.
"But going out with one of my friends? Doesn’t that feel... I don’t know, weird?" he asked, with a mix of discomfort and disbelief.
"What's weird is pretending nothing changed," she said firmly, though her tone remained affectionate. "And honestly, all your friends have been amazing. They’re trying to help us move on, trying to be supportive. This double date is just a way to... start over. Relax, girlfriend," she added with a mischievous smile and a wink. "Enjoy the night."
Calvin shook his head in disbelief.
"Start over? With Paul? He’s always been... kind of a goof."
She burst into laughter.
"Oh come on, don’t tell me you never noticed! Ever since the accident, Paul’s eyes have been glued to you. Every time he came over, he looked at you like a starving man eyeing dessert. He was dying to get his hands on you!"
"What?! I never noticed that!" Calvin said, genuinely surprised, a faint blush coloring his cheeks. "I just thought he was... awkward."
"Awkward? Sweetie, he was smitten. Or rather, smitten with her," she said, pointing directly at Calvin. "And you know what? You look gorgeous tonight. If I didn’t know you so well, I’d probably be jealous."
Calvin gave a shy little smile, still unsure, but starting to relax.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. A brief silence fell between them. His wife stood up, clearly excited.
"There they are! Ready?" she asked, holding out her hand.
He took a deep breath, rose carefully to his heels, and looked at her. She was smiling sincerely.
"Alright... let’s see what this ‘unforgettable night’ has in store," he murmured with a half-laugh.
Together, the two of them walked to the door. The night was just beginning.
