The Price of a Second Life
“You actually called that number on the card, didn’t you?” I asked.
A soft laugh came from the other end, smooth and melodic. “Very perceptive of you, Daniel. I thought after those six months, you’d forgotten all about that strange little episode.”
“Forgotten?” I exhaled. “I was just waiting for the confirmation. What did surprise me was that you—of all people—decided to swap bodies with a woman instead of some young guy.”
“Well,” she—he—paused. “Those six months of waiting weren’t exactly by choice. None of the young men I approached wanted to trade their youth for luxury. And I was growing impatient… eager to see if the experiment would really work. Then she appeared. Said she’d do anything for her family, that she needed money more than anything else. I hesitated, I really did. But... curiosity won.”
“I still can’t believe it,” Daniel said, shaking his head. “You traded half your fortune for this.”
“Not half,” she corrected gently. “She took ninety percent. I kept this house, the company, and an empty bank account. But you know me—I made most of it back within a month. The mind adapts faster than the mirror, apparently.”
Daniel smiled faintly as he held out the bouquet of roses. “You never cease to amaze me. Seeing you... well, dressed like that.”
She tilted her head, amusement flickering in her eyes. “My best friend brought me roses. I should treat that as something special.”
She let out a quiet laugh, shaking hes head. “What surprises me, though, are these flowers. In almost fifty years of friendship. And, if I’m being honest, I thought you’d bring something practical—like a business proposal, or a bottle to share. Roses, though? That’s... uncharacteristically charming of you.”
Daniel shifted his weight, glancing briefly at her outfit again. “Well, I didn’t expect this kind of welcome either. You knew I was coming, didn’t you?”
“Of course,” she said softly, turning slightly as the silk of her robe caught the light. “And I also knew you’d come, no matter how curious—or conflicted—you felt. You always were the kind who needed to see things for yourself.”
He smiled, but there was a flicker of unease behind it. “You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?”
She looked over her shoulder, meeting his gaze with quiet confidence. “Maybe I am. Maybe I wanted to remind you that I’m still me… even if everything looks different now. After all these years, you should know I never do anything without intent. I had a feeling those roses came with more than friendship.”
He met her eyes, a mix of curiosity and confusion swirling within him. “You’re not the same person I used to know.”
“Perhaps not,” she replied, her gaze steady. “But I remember everything we were. Every word, every promise... even the ones we never dared to speak.”
Daniel hesitated, studying her for a moment. “Then tell me—does this new life make you happy?”
She smiled faintly, her fingers tracing the edge of a rose petal. “Happiness feels different now. It’s quieter… and a little more dangerous.”
Daniel caught the tone beneath her words—the faint hint of invitation, the teasing edge that didn’t quite belong to friendship. He tilted his head. “Dangerous how?”
She looked up, her eyes steady on his. “Because every choice feels like an experiment now. Every gesture, every look… carries new meaning.”
He took a slow breath. “And what do you expect to find in all these new meanings?”
For a moment, she didn’t answer. The silence stretched between them, filled with the soft rustle of silk and the faint scent of roses. Then she spoke, her voice low but deliberate.
“I’m not sure yet,” she said. “But your visit… these flowers… they tell me you’re not just here to see what I’ve become. You’re here because part of you is curious too.”
Daniel’s lips parted, but no words came. She smiled again—calm, assured, with that same quiet allure that seemed to belong entirely to her new self.
“Maybe,” she whispered, turning the bouquet slightly in her hands, “we’re both about to discover something neither of us expected.”
