Alarmingly convincing

“Alright, young man, turn off that video game. It’s way past your bedtime.”

“What? Dude, you know very well you’re not my mom. You’re just temporarily in her body until we figure out how to switch you back.”
“I know, but I have to keep up appearances. I only agreed to that body-swap spell to help you out, remember? I didn’t expect the reversal to fail.”
“Yeah, well, my mom thinks the whole thing was some kind of cosmic freak event.”
“Exactly. Only the three of us know what really happened. Your dad still has no idea, which means we need to act like everything’s perfectly normal.”
“‘Normal’? You call that normal? Look at what you’re wearing!”
“What? It was in her wardrobe. Technically, it’s my wardrobe now. I just decided to… try it on.”
“Try it on?! You look like you’re about to star in a perfume commercial!”
“Well, someone has to keep the character believable, don’t you think?”

He sighed and dropped the controller on the couch.
“This is getting weirder by the minute…”
“Welcome to adulthood, sweetheart. Now go to bed before I actually ground you.”

Her tone — despite coming from a borrowed body — sounded alarmingly convincing.
